LOCATION

A 900-year-old settlement south-east of central Glasgow, Rutherglen is a small town on a hillside, on the edge of a small city crammed into a valley, in a small country stuck at the top of a small island, on the edge of a small continent, on the colder part of a small planet, in a small solar system on the outside of a small galaxy. Makes it feel a bit insignificant, doesn't it? Never mind, that's cos it is!

In the town itself, the strangest thing about Rutherglen is that the 'town centre' is actually in the far north of the district, which spreads out towards the fields of Lanarkshire to the south and east. So although Rutherglen as a whole is not badly served by amenities, transport and entertainment, it must be remembered that the area of the town includes distant schemes like Cathkin, Fernhill, Spittal and Springhall, where there is not much to do at all.

With this in mind, the town planners have concentrated their beautification efforts on the Main Street area, reasoning that not many folk are going to go up to the ghettos on the hill, so not much point in making them look nice. This is a fair viewpoint. Swanking up the Main Street also attempts to hide the fact that there are many losers, alcies, bums and weirdos wandering the streets and peering from windows. Still, if you're passing through quickly they're not as easy to spot. It must be said that Main Street is now one of the most pleasant-looking areas in Glasgow, with new pavements and cleaned stone.

ROAD MAPS

If you want to visit our fine town, there are many ways to come by road. Rutherglen is in the geographical centre of Scotland and is only a few miles from the main motorways from Edinburgh and England. If you're going to Glasgow, forget the M8, come through Ruggy!  We're used to the heavy traffic anyway!  Some maps to help you find your way...

TAXI NUMBERS

There are four main taxi companies in Rutherglen. Here are their cards:

Domino Cars - 0141 643 3333Hampden Cars - 0141 649 5050ABC Cars - 0141 613 0077Strathclyde Radio Cars - 0141 647 0077Cambis Cars - 0141 641 4040

I generally favour Strathclyde Radio Cars/Domino (seem to be the same company now) as they are Rutherglen based.  Cambis are more geared towards Cambuslang and a lot of Hampden's business is on Glasgow's South Side.  ABC could be one guy in a Mini for all I know.

 BUS ROUTES

Below you will find the bus routes for Rutherglen. This is only for one company, First, but they run 90% of the Strathclyde area's buses anyway. The main bus station in Glasgow is Buchanan Station, but only four Rutherglen buses (67, 203, 263, 267) leave from there. For most others (7, 12, 16, 18, 20) go to Argyle Street (outside Argyll Arcade) or Ingram Street (near the Gallery of Modern Art). If you are at Parkhead Forge in the east end, a 46 or 90 could also be useful.

For going back to Glasgow, all the buses stop either at Main Street (near the Arcade), Farmeloan Road (Chapmans Bar) or Mill Street (Aldi) except the 263...which is close enough, I can't be arsed going into the fine detail.

Advice: The 12 bus runs all night (very useful for nights out) but goes through Govanhill and Toryglen, attracting loonies and vandals on the way, so be careful! This is also true of the 75, which goes to ASDA, Croftfoot and Castlemilk.

Here's a link to the current First timetables for the buses mentioned (and all others in Glasgow), could be useful...

Bus routes to and from Rutherglen. look for the 16/18/20 to East Kilbride, the 12 to Rutherglen, the 267 to Newmains and the 75 to Castlemilk.

TRAIN ROUTES

Here's the local train maps for the Rutherglen area and surroundings. Glasgow Central Station is the place to catch trains to the town, about 5 an hour go through one of the four stations highlighted. Look for Motherwell, Lanark or Newton trains. You can also sometimes go straight to Ruggy from Clydebank or Partick (see green line).  First Bus have monopolised the trains now too, so unless you got a a car you'll be lining their pockets.

If you seriously want to know, here's a direct link to the First Scotrail PDF file for the area.  Aren't I good to you?

Train Routes: As you can see, most of Rutherglen is not served by trains and Castlemilk dosen't even have a station. But the lines via Burnside and Rutherglen both get you in or out of town in about 15 minutes

Well, now you've got no excuse for not visiting us! It's a historic, picturesque, welcoming and interesting town. Don't be put off by my crap, remember I've had to live in the place for 20 years! Not all the local will rob you, in fact most of them are really nice, if a bit mad!

Come and have a look now the Town Hall's done up, you'll like Rutherglen!... Well, you'll like the Main Street...or at least some if the Main Street... maybe... emm... well never mind, come and get pished and hate the place!
