 INTRODUCTION

Because I am a bit sad, and wanted to find out a bit more about my town, I have spent much of the last two years walking around Rutherglen taking photos.  The following pages show what I've found. First a bit abut the town, if you haven't been paying attention on other pages:

Rutherglen is about 4 miles from the centre of Glasgow. The town has about 40,000 inhabitants and Rutherglen is actually much older than Glasgow. We have a big clock tower which has just been done up. We also have a new swimming pool, astroturf pitches, a bingo hall and over a dozen pubs. Sounds all right, doesn't it? Well, wrong! It's pish!

I am very lucky to live in Burnside, where I don’t have to worry about getting attacked outside my house, or anywhere nearby, unless I am unlucky and bump into the Wifty (Fernhill neds) on their way home from a sojourn in my tedious suburban abode. But I know that some people have worries like this all the time, so I can’t complain really.

Rutherglen is also likely to benefit a lot over the next few years from being part of South Lanarkshite… sorry… shire, which is a much richer area than Glasgow City.  There are much worse places nearby for unemployment, drug abuse, poverty, poor housing and alcoholism, but parts of Ruggy are pretty bad too.

I have slagged Rutherglen and its bizarre communities but I guess it is an alright place to live really. It is quite a famous town and at least we have some shops, industry and transport which is more than some places have.  And on a nice day Overtoun Park is alright.

Sorry if you are from an area that I have taken the piss out of – that is, everywhere – and are offended.  But am I wrong?  Maybe just a bit too pessimistic but at least I find the place funny!  If you really care, give me a shout to say so, ut otherwise it's just a daft website, find something more useful to do with your time!  Fuck knows I should have done instead of making it!

I don't have a car, so I took most of these photos whilst on long walks around the area, so if anyone saw some weirdo taking a photo of their house, it was me!  Sorry if I freaked you out.  There are also images that I have 'borrowed' from other sites I have been to.  Most are of things I couldn't have taken a normal photo of.

I have not included any images of people as that would be unfair without asking permission, so lots of the photos are a but dull, but I hope they give an idea of what the town looks like.  Some of them are already out of date, as Ruggy is being redeveloped all the time, so I have made a page for the new things I see, so I only have to update one page!

I have put a wee table showing how to get to each area onto the pages.  It makes me feel I am encouraging people to visit. Realistically though, hardly anyone outwith the town will even read this, and the rest of my site could well put off more potential visitors than it attracts. In any case, you should also refer to the Transport and Pubs/Grub pages for travel information.

I also made a ratings guide to each area, which is detailed on each page. The overall results are under the map...

If you don't like something I've written, feel free to E-mail me and I'll think about amending/removing the offending passage.  Or perhaps you have something more positive to contribute than my miserable sarcastic bollocks.  But if you live here it's unlikely you have any positive energy at all so I doubt it.  Also sorry if the pages takes ages to load but that might be because you've got a crappy cable modem. Get broadband for fuck sake, it's much cheaper and faster. I recommend ntl:

 INTERACTIVE MAP

Here's a map of the different districts of the 'Royal Burgh'. Click on an area's name to find out all about it! Or if you can't be arsed clicking the map just scroll down and click a link! There are more detailed aerial maps with landmarks on each district's page. You can click the arrows at the sides of each map to go to the adjoining areas. I have used a few icons to show certain features:

 - Police Station

 - Post Office

 - New building (completed)

 - Train Station

 - New building (planned)

The 'Interactive' map of Rutherglen. Click on the names! If you can't see it you should probably just use the links below!

 RATINGS

On each page I have rated each area out of 10 in five categories:

  • Safety - (chance of getting accosted in some way on the street or even at home)

  • Amenities/Commerce - (how much stuff there is to do/ work/buy in the area)

  • Beauty - the natural and man-made attractive features in the area

  • Transport - the range of facilities which exist to take people in and out of the area

  • Residents -  A sort of sociopolitical thing, but basically, do the local folk treat visitors and each other alright, whether rich, poor, old or young?

The results for each area can be found on their respective pages. You can see the overall scores below as well as Rutherglen's overall score out of 700 (I suppose this would be 'the ideal city'). Low 400s is an unsurprising but satisfying result for a middling, insignificant and socially mixed town like Rutherglen.

I think I've been fair with each area but if you have a gripe about a score, as with every other aspect of the site, drop me a line. I won't guarantee I'll act on your complaint but I do promise to read everything and I am not pretending the site is perfect, so I welcome constructive criticism which can be used to improve the site - as if anyone cares anyway.
